We have a 2002 Chevy Silverado S1500 with the 4.3 V6. It doesn’t get driven much. I hopped in it the other day and it won’t start. It turns over fine, but there is no hint of catching. These engines are prone to corrosion of the distributor cap and rotor so I replaced those. I even charged the battery to make sure there was adequate juice. There are no codes. There appears to be fuel pressure at the Schrader valve. I’m stumped. Any guesses?

Can you hear the fuel pump priming when you turn the key?
Also the ignition control module and the coil are very common to go bad on these. Have you checked for spark?

Bad fuel?

It might be time for the wires and plugs, too.

Timing, maybe?

Worthwhile to check the crankshaft position sensor.

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? Pumps typically die completely and give no pressure, but I have seen them suck up particles into the “sock” before the pump and cause really weird pressure issues.

Trying coil and module now. Fingers crossed.

Do you smell raw fuel at all? These engines have issues with fuel leaks inside the intake manifold (all of the injectors and stuff are inside it) that cause an excessively rich condition that can flood it.

Well, you know it has to be spark or fuel. I would make sure it has spark first. If it doesn’t it could be the ICM, magnetic distributor rotor, ignition coil, or crank sensor. Unless they are extremely old, I doubt the plugs, wires, or bad gas would cause it not to start.
Another thing to consider is that these cars need a lot of fuel pressure, right around 40psi, so it might look like the fuel pump is working properly when it’s not. The injector unit also goes out fairly frequently, which could run you a fair bit. If you have proper fuel pressure and spark, that would be my guess.

Nope

Plugged in new coil and module and no result. I think I can hear the fuel pump, but it is hard to tell with all the damn chimes going off.

If you pull the the wire that goes from the coil to distributor and crank it. Does it spark?

Rodent damage? If it doesn’t get driven often, is it parked somewhere that something small with could get at it?

Any codes come up?

Nope. No codes.
